An Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is a very popular procedure, as it gives a whole new look by making the abdomen flat, firm and youthful after the effects of pregnancy and childbirth. 96% of patients surveyed on Real Self said a Tummy Tuck was ‘worth it’.
In this blog I will discuss whether it is possible to have a baby after having surgery and what are the effects.
An abdominoplasty procedure is commonly done to correct the changes seen following pregnancy and childbirth and and ideally done after you've finished having children.
Many women are concerned with the appearance of their body after having a baby. During pregnancy, the abdominal skin as well as abdominal muscles will stretch to accommodate the growing baby. In some pregnancies, the abdominal muscles ( six pack muscle) may separate. If this occurs, the abdominal area can look vastly different with unsightly bulging and hernias due to weakness of the abdominal wall. The operation will repair muscle separation, remove excess abdominal skin and contour the abdomen with liposuction to create a flat and firm stomach.
If you fall pregnant after you have had your tummy tuck, then your abdomen will go through all the changes including muscle stretching, muscle separation and the development of hernias due to the weakness. In addition your abdominal skin will stretch and your scar will darken. In short, you will be faced with the same issues you had with the appearance of your abdomen before your surgery. And you may have to undergo revision surgery after childbirth if you are unhappy with the appearance of your abdomen. It is for this reason that plastic surgeons recommend waiting until you have finished having children to undergo this procedure.
The best thing to do if you are considering an abdominoplasty procedure, is to consult with a plastic surgeon. He/she will be able to assess your case and circumstances, and offer advice on the best way to proceed.
As with any medical procedure, it is important to seek the advice of a professional skilled in addressing your specific issue. Each person's anatomy is different and an examination and evaluation by a Plastic Surgeon will help determine the most appropriate and effective approach to meet your particular needs.
