Effective Skin Care in Your 40's and 50's

Whether you’ve made the decision to age gracefully or are uncomfortable with the visible signs of ageing there are steps you can take to maintain your skin to look your best for your age. 

Let’s dive a little deeper.


For starters, how you will look in your 40’s ad 50’s is largely determined by your family genetics and lifestyle.  

Your skin is both a barrier and an organ.  Skin ageing is a combination of intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic causes (lifestyle and sun exposure related). Long term sun exposure (UV Radiation) is the main factor for extrinsic ageing and is also called photoageing.  So, what you do in 20’s and 30’s can help reduce your environmental or lifestyle related ageing changes

As you cross the milestone of 40, you notice changes in your skin due to underlying structural changes such as reduction in collagen content, skin elasticity and skin hydration. Your skin’s appearance changes to dull and dry with wrinkles, acne and pigmentation. The changes in the hormone levels that occur before menopause also contribute to these changes.

At the level of the skin cell, there are many molecular mechanisms that cause ageing but for the purposes of this article we will discuss the top two causes; namely Oxidative Stress/Free radicals and Advanced Glycation End Product Accumulation.


Oxidative stress, free radicals and skin ageing


Free Radicals are unstable molecules produced in response to sun exposure, air pollution and environmental toxins. These free radicals attack healthy cells, damage cellular DNA and the cell membrane and fast tracks the process of ageing of the cells, which eventually shows as fine lines, wrinkles and dull skin tone, all characteristic hall marks of ageing.

Antioxidants neutralise free radicals that degrade collagen. Antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Coenzyme Q10 are useful. A good natural source of antioxidants is Green Tea.


Advanced Glycation End Products and skin ageing


Collagen along with elastin is a key element that keeps your skin plump, youthful and wrinkle free.

If you consume a diet rich in sugar and simple carbs, the sugar attaches to the collagen by a process called glycation, induces a ‘pro inflammatory’ state, produces enzymes that attack and break down the collagen and elastin in your skin which ultimately fast tracks the ageing process.  

In addition, a diet rich in sugar can cause other skin problems such as acne, rosacea and skin breakouts.

To avoid skin ageing due to Advanced Glycation End Products, it is important to consume a diet that is low in sugar and preformed Advanced Glycation End Products.





Sun protection, healthy diet, exercise, sleep and skin care should be continued for their ongoing benefit. 




When you turn 40, your skin demands more than just basic skin care. With progress in technology there are many effective solutions including medical grade skin care and neurotoxins and dermal fillers.


Skin care products to consider:

For dry skin use a moisturiser with Hyaluronic Acid as the HA attracts water. Hyaluronic acid helps increase skin moisture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

As the turnover of skin cells slows down with age, the skin appears dull. At home low grade chemical peels or products containing glycolic acid help remove the dead skin layer, promote cell turnover, improve texture, tone and brighten the complexion. If you are using Glycolic acid cleanser it is important to use sun protection with SPF 50+.

Acne and Rosacea are common after 40 and regular skin care with careful attention to dietary triggers can help. Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) serum can help rosacea. If acne or rosacea persist, it is advisable to see a Dermatologist.




Wrinkles are likely to be a concern once you turn 40. In addition to routine skin care and sun protection using 50+, the use of medical grade skin care creams and serums consisting of Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C and Vitamin E will help maintain your skin health.

Vitamin A (retinoids) stimulate renewal of skin cells and aid in forming new collagen to make the skin thicker and wrinkles less noticeable. 

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that neutralises free radicals that degrade collagen and protects your skin cells. Medical Grade Vitamin C serums replenish your skin’s anti-ageing weapons and help fight skin ageing.

Neurotoxins (Botulinum Toxin) can also be used to effectively treat wrinkles especially of the glabella (frown lines), crow’s feet and forehead.


While some of the above information is very scientific, in the end effective skin care in your 40's and 50's boils down to the following:


*   Include anti-oxidants

*   Upgrade your skin care 

*   Keep to a low sugar diet

*   Maintain the basics - exercise, sleep, diet, minimise sun exposure

*   Consider Neurotoxins to treat wrinkles
