How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

02 Mar

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers are very popular for replacing lost volume in the skin for a more youthful appearance. Some of the common brand names are Juvederm, Restylane and Esthelis.

‘Fillers’ imply that these substances fill or replace lost volume in the face that naturally occurs from ageing. The effects of fillers were measured and analysed. Researchers in France have recently found that Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers do more than fill; they stimulate the formation of pro-collagen and collagen in the skin.

The findings were published in the Journal of Dermatological Science in Jan 2013.

FAQS about dermal fillers

Which areas get the best results?
Popular is any combo of lip (usually 1-2ml), cheek (2-4ml), under eye hollows and dark circles (1-2ml+), and jowls (2-4ml).

How do they work?
By boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid they revitalise, add volume that has been lost due to ageing, and instantly diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The result is softer and natural look. Fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body.

What are the benefits?
Dermal Filler injections give a natural looking result that does not affect facial expression. These injections provide an easy way to reduce wrinkles, smooth the skin, replace lost volume and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and last for around 12 months. Some fillers last up to 18 months.

Is the treatment safe?
The dermal fillers that I use (and my patients love) are the Swiss Made Esthelis, Fortelis and Modelis fillers. The primary ingredient is Hyaluronic acid. This is a biodegradable and naturally occurring substance that is gradually absorbed by the body over time, with a proven and FDA-endorsed safety record.

Rather than using a basic needle and syringe, I use the Swiss-made Anteis Computerised Advanced Injecting System, which allows me to inject fillers with ‘Swiss Precision’. This provides a natural look and feel; so everyone will notice (but no one will know).
