DROOPING EYELID OR PTOSIS

Drooping eyelid or Ptosis is common and caused by the progressive laxity of muscles that lift the eyelid. With age, the muscle that opens the upper eyelid stretches and loses its elasticity.

Frequent rubbing of eyes, use of contact lenses, cataract operation, repeated episodes of eyelid swelling due to allergies, and eyelid trauma all cause overstretching of the levator muscle. It's important to note that if forehead wrinkles associated with dropping lids are treated with Botox, the eyelid droop may become obvious.

Forehead wrinkles are the first sign of a drooping eyelid, strange but true.

When the eyelid muscle is unable to open the eyelid the brain instructs the forehead muscle to go into over-drive. This solves one problem but creates another. Forehead muscles are forced to work non-stop and at the end of a busy day patients may complain of headaches, heavy eyelids, inability to keep the eyes open, and a feeling of facial muscle fatigue. Immediately following surgery patients report that the heaviness has been lifted and the opening of the eyelid is now effortless. If you want to learn more about what treatment options would be suitable for your drooping eyelid (ptosis) register your place to attend a free information evening with Dr Naveen Somia.
