Marketing Cosmetic Surgery to Children Is Wrong!
By Dr Naveen Somia MBBS, PhD, FRACS on 31 Aug
Last weekend when I was browsing through the newspaper that had its share of ‘not so good’ articles about politics, ISIS and Zika Virus one article grabbed my attention. I read of a number of cosmetic surgery apps available on the Apple store marketed to young girls. These apps simulate operations such as nose jobs, liposuction and tummy tucks. By using enticing titles familiar to 6 year old girls like ‘mermaid plastic surgery’ and ‘plastic surgery princess’ the promoters then use the next level of catchy 'kid friendly’ phrases like ‘every girl dreams of a delicate face and stunning figure'.

Will A Tummy Tuck Get Rid of Stretch Marks?
By Dr Naveen Somia MBBS, PhD, FRACS on 20 Jul
Stretch marks refer to the scar-like streaks or stripes that occur on the skin, especially on the abdominal area. This is due to microfractures of the collagen fibres in the skin, making the skin less elastic and unable to shrink. It is seen in conditions like, massive weight gain or pregnancy, where the skin undergoes rapid stretching. There are many solutions that claim to get rid of stretch marks including special oils, scar creams and laser treatments. Sadly the results are not consistent. Since many women consider a tummy tuck to address post pregnancy changes, it’s a question I get asked often “Will a tummy tuck get rid of stretch marks?”. In this blog I’ll reveal if it is a viable option.

Can you remove eye bags without eyelid surgery?
By Dr Naveen Somia MBBS, PhD, FRACS on 01 Jun
Do you suffer from eye bags that make you look older and tired? Did you know there are treatments other than lower eyelid surgery that could help you?
Dark under eye circles can and eyebags make you look tired and older than you are. It is reasonable to consider Dermal Filler that will give you a good result as it will camouflage the hollows. It will need to be repeated once every 12 to 18 months. I would recommend adding Radio Frequency skin tightening and new RF fat shrinking device to blend the hollowness and tighten the skin. You could then continue to use medical grade skin care to maintain the results of your initial treatment. An experienced Plastic Surgeon will be able to give you accurate advice during the consultation.
Not every non surgical treatment will work for everyone, but it's good to be informed, and explore your options. Learn how to treat eyebags without eyelid surgery by viewing my slideshare.

I have one droopy eyelid. Should I fix one or both?
By Dr Naveen Somia MBBS, PhD, FRACS on 29 Mar
Eyelid Ptosis or droopy eyelid is a medical condition that restricts vision and can result in a tired or half asleep look. As we get older, the muscle and connective tissue sling that lifts and opens the upper eyelid becomes overstretched and loses its elasticity similar to an overstretched rubber band. As a result the muscle is unable to maintain the normal eyelid position and the eyelid droops. Even if one eyelid is droopy, both are fixed for symmetry. In this blog, I’ll discuss how you can fix a droopy eyelid and feel more confident.

They will, however, contemplate paying for reconstructive or functional surgery. Each company determines the parameters by which they establish medically necessary blepharoplasty using reconstructive and functional criteria. These are not consistent among insurance companies and no standards have been established, however, generally the indications for medically necessary blepharoplasty include:

How to treat crepey skin and under eye hollows after eyelid surgery
By Dr Naveen Somia MBBS, PhD, FRACS on 03 Nov
Crepey skin and under eye hollows are common post eyelid surgery concerns. Lower eyelid surgery, also known as lower blepharoplasty, is great for reducing the bulging, baggy appearance in the lower eyelids. However, it involves removing the fat pads below the eyes and often a hollow, sunken look can occur if too much fat is removed. Over time, the cheek fat pad descends lower in the face and this adds to a hollow, sunken appearance. The skin over this area may appear thin and wrinkly which is often the result of a loss of elasticity in the lower eyelid skin due to ageing and a previous surgery. In this blog I’ll explore what surgical and non-surgical options are available after eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of crepey skin and under eye hollows.
